Despite the coronavirus restrictions, rallies will take place in number of European countries on 1 May. Announcements have been made that anywhere between several dozen and thousands of people will take to the streets of various cities.
Members of France’s major trade unions march in Paris on 1 May, on International Worker’s Day (May Day). Alongside pensioners, students, and other Parisians, they are protesting government policies curtailing social benefits and civil liberties, as well as job cuts and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Such May Day rallies have repeatedly ended in riots and clashes with the police in the past, although in 2020 many such demonstrations did not take place due to the pandemic.
